It appears that I need to hire some bored, adventurous, person; for a one time personal favor, and I have no idea how much to offer in compensation. I asked a friend, and she said she would, but as happened the last time I asked her to do me a favor, she’s apparently found more important things to do. So I’m going to have to advertise on Craigslist.
Said task is simple enough.
When we moved, we left a lot of stuff in storage, and the owner of the storage facility has stopped cashing our checks. So naturally I’m presuming he sold our stuff. But we can’t stop paying him, (or pursue legal action), until we know. Physically going down there to check would be an eight hour drive one way, not accounting for food and bathroom stops, and cost at least eighty dollars in gas each way.
So, I took several screen shots from Google maps showing the location of the storage, circled the pertinent parts in Paint Shop Pro, and sent those along with a detailed description of the specific location of the unit we rented, to my friend. My offer to her was $25, because she was going to be visiting her family a few miles from the location, and there’s no fence around the storage, so my thinking was that the work involved would be minimal. Just go there, look at the unit, and if it’s empty, take a picture on her phone and send it to me online. Simple.
But $25 didn’t motivate her, so I’m guessing it wouldn’t motivate anyone else living in that city, either.
What’s a good payment to offer people who might be perusing Craigslist in our old home town? $50 seems a bit high, to me, for driving maybe five miles round trip and taking a picture on your phone. That’s nearly a day’s pay, at minimum wage. But I’ll go that high if I have to.
And obviously I’ll ask a total stranger to take a picture, (or a few), regardless. Just to keep him honest.
The fact that my “friend” isn’t living up to that title, and might well find herself on my blocked list as a result, is a topic for another time, when I’m not so tired.
